The National Basketball Association announced early Friday, April 24 (Philippine Standard Time) that Derrick White of the Boston Celtics has been named the recipient of the league’s prestigious Sportsmanship Award, an honor voted on by his fellow players across the league.
White emerged as the clear winner in a field of respected nominees, earning 20 percent of the first-place votes from the 386 players who cast ballots. He accumulated a total of 2,826 points, finishing ahead of T. J. McConnell of the Indiana Pacers, who placed second with 2,566 points, while Harrison Barnes of the San Antonio Spurs secured third with 2,466 points.
Presented annually since the 1995–96 season, the NBA Sportsmanship Award recognizes the player who best exemplifies the ideals of fair play, integrity, and respect both on and off the court. The award is officially named after Joe Dumars, a Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee and two-time NBA champion who was also the inaugural recipient. Dumars famously spent his entire 14-year career with the Detroit Pistons and became synonymous with professionalism and class—qualities the award continues to celebrate.

For White, the recognition is a testament not only to his on-court production but also to his reputation among peers as one of the league’s most respected competitors. Known for his calm demeanor, team-first mentality, and defensive discipline, the 31-year-old guard has steadily built a profile as a player who impacts winning without seeking the spotlight.
“Derrick has represented everything that is good about the game since he entered the league. The Sportsmanship Award is a deserved honor because of how Derrick consistently carries himself – both on and off the court. In every way, Derrick exemplifies what it means to be a Celtic and is more than deserving of this honor,” said Brad Stevens, President of Basketball Operations for the Celtics, in an official statement.
White’s win also marks back-to-back Sportsmanship Awards for Boston, following Jrue Holiday’s recognition during the 2024–25 season. The consecutive honors further reinforce the Celtics’ culture of professionalism and accountability as they continue to contend among the NBA’s elite teams.
Beyond sportsmanship, White is in the midst of arguably the best season of his career. A cornerstone of Boston’s defensive identity, he has positioned himself as a strong candidate for one of the NBA’s All-Defensive Teams. He was the top vote-getting guard in Defensive Player of the Year voting this season and has consistently been among the most disruptive perimeter defenders in the league.
Statistically, White ranks second among all guards in blocks per game at 1.3—an uncommon figure for a backcourt player—and leads all guards in contested shots with 550, underscoring his relentless defensive activity. Alongside Harrison Barnes, he is one of only two players this season to record at least 80 steals and 80 blocks, highlighting his rare versatility on the defensive end.
His all-around contributions extend well beyond defense. In 77 appearances this season, White is averaging a career-high 16.5 points, along with 4.4 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 1.1 steals, and a career-best 1.3 blocks per game. His consistency and impact earned him Eastern Conference Defensive Player of the Month honors in February, further solidifying his reputation as one of the league’s premier two-way guards.
White’s journey to this point has been one of steady growth and perseverance. Selected 29th overall in the 2017 NBA Draft by the San Antonio Spurs, he developed into a reliable contributor over five seasons before being traded to Boston on February 10, 2022. Since joining the Celtics, he has flourished within the team’s system, playing a crucial role in their success.
That success reached its peak in 2024 when White helped lead Boston to an NBA championship, adding a title to his résumé along with two All-Defensive Second Team selections. Now, with the addition of the Sportsmanship Award, White further cements his standing not just as an elite contributor, but as a model professional in today’s NBA.
As the Celtics continue their pursuit of sustained excellence, White’s blend of humility, discipline, and high-level play serves as both a foundation and an example—proof that impact in the NBA is measured not only in numbers, but also in character.
