The Philippines women’s national under-17 football team are set to embark on another major international test as they compete in the upcoming 2026 AFC Under-17 Women’s Asian Cup, scheduled from May 1 to 17 at the Suzhou Taihu Football Sports Centre in Suzhou, China.

The tournament marks a significant opportunity for the young Filipinas to test themselves against some of Asia’s strongest youth programs, as they continue to build toward a long-term pathway feeding into the senior national team setup. With growing investment in women’s football development in the Philippines, this campaign is being viewed as both a competitive challenge and a key developmental milestone.

At the helm is head coach Nahuel Arrarte, who previously served as assistant coach for the senior Philippines women’s national football team during their historic run at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023. His experience at the highest level of women’s football has been instrumental in shaping the philosophy and structure of the youth side.

Supporting Arrarte are a seasoned coaching group including Marnelli Dimzon, Jim Ashley Flores, and goalkeeping specialist Jose Fernando Bello. Dimzon brings valuable continuity to the program, having previously served as head coach of the senior Filipinas from 2017 to 2019, while Bello adds international expertise to the technical staff, particularly in developing young goalkeepers.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Arrarte highlighted the importance of alignment between youth and senior programs, emphasizing the long-term vision behind the squad’s development.

“The young players are inspired by the ongoing success of the senior national team and hopefully the next Hali Long, Olivia McDaniel or Jackie Sawicki will come through the youth programs that are being put in place. Alignment is the key to success in order to deliver players a positive pathway to the senior national team,” Arrarte said.

The Filipinas have been drawn into a challenging Group A, where they will face regional powerhouses South Korea, North Korea, and Chinese Taipei. Despite the tough opposition, the squad features a promising blend of local standouts and overseas-based players, reflecting the expanding reach of Filipino talent development in women’s football.

According to Philippine Football Federation leadership, the team’s preparation has been deliberately structured to expose players to high-level competition and diverse playing environments in preparation for continental action.

“Our U-17 team has been prepared with intent and purpose, with strategic camps in the Philippines, Thailand, and China, and with elite friendlies against New Zealand, Thailand, Myanmar, and China. We believe this group represents the future of Philippine women’s football,” Philippine Football Federation president John Anthony Gutierrez added.

The buildup has included intensive training camps and international friendlies designed to simulate tournament conditions and strengthen tactical cohesion. Coaches have placed emphasis on discipline, defensive organization, and transitional play, areas seen as crucial when facing top-tier Asian opponents.

The Philippines will open their Group A campaign on Saturday, May 2, with a highly anticipated clash against South Korea. The match is expected to serve as an early benchmark for the squad as they aim to compete not only for results but also to gain valuable experience at one of the continent’s premier youth tournaments.
