The ZUS Coffee Thunderbelles displayed why they can never be counted out after staging a staggering comeback from a two-set deficit to defeat the Choco Mucho Flying Titans, 22-25, 20-25, 25-16, 25-17, 15-10, in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) On Tour preseason tournament on Tuesday, August 5, at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

The victory ensured that ZUS Coffee clinched the final quarterfinal spot in the PVL On Tour, once again proving their mettle in do-or-die situations. The win was a testament to their grit and resilience—a pattern that has defined their campaign.

Their comeback was made possible by the performances of Chinnie Arroyo and Jovelyn Gonzaga. Arroyo finished with 21 points on 20 kills, while Gonzaga scored 16 points, five of which came in the fifth and final set. Gonzaga also anchored the defense with seven excellent digs. The duo received solid support from rookie AC Miner, who contributed 14 points, including four crucial blocks, while Fiola Ceballos and Kate Santiago chipped in 10 points each.

Gonzaga credited team management for instilling a fighting spirit and praised team chemistry in the post-match press conference.

“We are super grateful, first of all, to the management, who never doubted us. They just kept telling us to give our best and let God handle the rest, so everything really felt worth it,” Gonzaga said.

“Huge credit to the coaching staff for how they managed us on the court. I’m really thankful because this is already my second conference here, and we’ve already made two quarterfinal appearances. It shows that all our hard work in training is paying off. I’m also very grateful for the relationship we have as a team. I think our performance reflects how solid we are—both on and off the court,” she added.

For Choco Mucho, Isa Molde’s career-high 27 points went in vain, as did her all-around performance, which included 23 kills, three blocks, an ace, and 14 excellent receptions.

ZUS Coffee now faces the unbeaten PLDT High Speed Hitters in their quarterfinal encounter on Thursday, August 7, at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

“I’m always proud when I see improvement. It’s something that makes us happy and proud, and hopefully, it continues. We basically have more talent, but we are not yet a complete team. We have big names, I have more options for subs—we are about eight or nine players deep. But it’s still not enough. We are not consistent yet. We are not a solid team yet. We are trying, though,” head coach Jerry Yee concluded in the press conference.
