Zavier Lucero focused on comeback as Magnolia eyes PBA redemption

The Magnolia Hotshots are looking to turn the page after a disappointing exit in the quarterfinals of the recently concluded PBA Philippine Cup, where they fell to the TNT Tropang Giga.

Despite the early exit, rising star Zavier Lucero remains focused and optimistic as he begins his preparations for PBA Season 50, tentatively set to tip off in October. The 25-year-old forward has returned to his hometown of Vallejo, California, to rest and begin his offseason training.

“Preseason prep has been good—being able to still work around my knee and polish things that I need to work on,” Lucero told Spin.ph. “My handles and my shot are a constant work in progress. I have been dealing with patellar tendinitis due to high usage in the last two conferences. The only goal this summer is to work with my physical therapist and try to get rid of it.”

Lucero was a key contributor for the Hotshots during the Philippine Cup, averaging 18.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game, and is expected to be a central figure in the team’s new offensive system under a new head coach.

In a bold offseason move, the Hotshots parted ways with long-time head coach Chito Victolero, who had led the franchise since 2016. Stepping into the role is PBA legend LA Tenorio, taking on his first major coaching assignment after an illustrious playing career.

Lucero expressed his appreciation for Victolero’s guidance during his transition into the PBA.

“I reached out to coach Chito just to express my gratitude. The role of a head coach is a thankless job. When the team wins, the players get all the glory. When the team loses, the coach takes all the blame,” said Lucero. “It’s not an easy job with so much to balance, but I believe he always had the best intentions for the team. I’m grateful for both the opportunity and the trust he gave me.”

Magnolia also ended its long-standing partnership with veteran big man Rafi Reavis, releasing the 48-year-old after a decorated 15-season run with the team. In the front office, Jayson Webb was appointed as the new team governor, while Kirk Collier joined the coaching staff from Barangay Ginebra as an assistant coach.

On the player personnel front, the Hotshots re-signed Peter Alfaro, Russel Escoto, and Joseph Eriobu, and acquired veteran guard Paolo Taha via free agency.

As Lucero continues his recovery and development in the U.S., anticipation builds around how Magnolia’s retooled roster and coaching staff will perform in Season 50. The franchise hopes its offseason shake-up will bring renewed energy and improved results on the hardwood.
