The Philippines women’s volleyball national team made history in the recently concluded 2025 Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Women’s Nations Cup by securing the silver medal, despite losing to Vietnam in the finals on Saturday, June 14, at Dong Anh Arena in Hanoi.
Alas Pilipinas were dominated by the hosts, falling 15–25, 17–25, 14–25. Despite the loss, the Filipinas registered a historic runner-up finish, which also propelled them 10 places up in the world rankings—from 56th to 46th.
Vietnam’s head coach, Nguyen Tuan Kiet, was impressed by the performance of Alas Pilipinas in the AVC Women’s Nations Cup. In the post-match press conference, he stated that the Philippines is now a serious contender to challenge Vietnam’s dominance in Asia.
“Every victory is sweet, but winning on home ground is especially exhilarating. It truly delighted our fans here. The Philippines team delivered a remarkable performance this season. However, perhaps due to playing a grueling five-set match in the semifinals yesterday, they were drained of energy,” Tuan Kiet said.
“Nevertheless, the Philippines will undoubtedly remain a serious contender for Vietnam this year,” he added.
In addition to winning the silver medal, Alas Pilipinas also had three of their star players—Jia De Guzman, Angel Canino, and Dell Palomata—earn individual awards for their exceptional performances throughout the tournament.
De Guzman won Best Setter for the second consecutive year, while Canino added to her growing résumé by winning the Best Outside Spiker award. Notably, she had won Best Opposite Hitter last year. Palomata was recognized with the Best Middle Blocker honor.
The likes of Canino and Bella Belen caught the eye of Tuan Kiet, who believes they have a bright future.
“In addition to familiar faces, players No. 12 and No. 4 stood out with impressive performances despite their modest height,” he concluded.
Alas Pilipinas have a packed schedule ahead in 2025. They will next prepare for the VTV International Women’s Volleyball Cup in Vietnam before competing in the Southeast Asian Volleyball League.
