UAAP: UST seeking to continue hot form against FEU

UAAP Season 88 is nearing its halfway point with all teams looking to end an unpredictable Round 1 on high notes.

The UST Growling Tigers, coming off a triple-overtime thriller against the Ateneo Blue Eagles, will look to secure their twice-to-beat advantage spot going against the struggling but always-game FEU Tamaraws at the Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday.

In the day’s early game, the DLSU Green Archers are looking to regain their pedigree after a loss to the league-leading NU Bulldogs in their last game against the UE Red Warriors, who are eager to finally break their winless spell this season.

UST, which is set to start its gruelling two-game stretch this week, is coming off a hard-fought triple-overtime win against the Blue Eagles. They showed their fitness levels to be above the crop, but can it be sustained against the always-dangerous Tamaraws on Wednesday and the Adamson Soaring Falcons on Saturday?

The Tamaraws are 1-4 so far, but their performances have not reflected a team in the dirt. Janrey Pasaol has proven that he can pick his spots and hit tough shots against the best teams in the UAAP. Mix that with a firecracker like Jorick Bautista, the consistent presence of foreign student-athlete (FSA) Mo Konateh, and lengthy role players such as Jedrick Daa and Kirby Mongcopa, and you have a team that can stand toe-to-toe with the best of them.

It is reasonable to expect that the Growling Tigers will look to slow things down on offense, but Nic Cabanero, Gelo Crisostomo, Collins Akowe, and Forthsky Padrigao will surely want to retain their hot form. The game will ultimately come down to how head coach Pido Jarencio and UST can control, and if they can contain Pasaol and Bautista’s scoring efforts down the stretch.

Starting the season, DLSU looked like it was still adapting to a Kevin Quiambao-less era. These past few games have seen inconsistency from their guard duo of Kean Baclaan and Jacob Cortez, while also dealing with the loss of Mason Amos to a torn MCL.

UE, despite being winless, shares the same regard as FEU in that some of their losses were still competitive. FSA Precious Momowei has not yet found his dominant self but has been an anchor on both ends for the Red Warriors. New head coach Chris Gavina is still finding the best lineups that can plug their perimeter defense woes, and it will only be a matter of time before they get their first win.

However, a Green Archers team coached by Topex Robinson, regardless of recent form, is still dangerous. UE will have to navigate the dangers of Mike Phillips and the aforementioned guard duo of Baclaan and Cortez before they can try to carve something on their recently stale offense.
