Retired PBA player and rookie head coach Ronald Tubid aims to instill the defensive philosophies he played with in his 16-year career in a young Terrafirma Dyip for the league’s historic 50th season.

Tubid, known for his tenacious two-way capabilities as a member of the San Miguel franchise, said he wants to teach the lessons he learned from past coaches such as Leo Austria, John Cardel, and Jong Uichico to a Terrafirma Dyip that is still finding its identity.

“This time siguro sistema ko, for how many coaches na dinaan ko coach Leo (Austria), nandyan si coach John (Cardel), coach Jong (Uichico) so lahat yung mga coaches na dinaan ko may nakukuha ako,” he said. “Tapos dagdagan pa namin ng sa sistema namin na before you shoot depensa muna so iyon ang focus namin.”

Tubid was hailed in the All-Defensive team in 2009, while also being a vital role player in his nine championships with Barangay Ginebra and San Miguel.

The Dyip missed the postseason in all conferences last year and recently picked former Ateneo big man Geo Chiu as the first overall pick, alongside other new draftees such as Shawn Umali, Aurin Catacutan, and Dolan Adlawan, among others.

Terrafirma had two failed attempts to be taken over, first by Starhorse Shipping Lines and more recently by Zamboanga Valientes.

Tubid took over head coaching duties from former interim coach Raymond Tiongco in the offseason that also saw the franchise having multiple failed attempts to be taken over, first by Starhorse Shipping Lines, and more recently with Zamboanga Valientes.
