TNT’s injury woes mount as Oftana, Williams go down in Game 4 win over Rain or Shine

The TNT Tropang Giga moved one step closer to the ongoing Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup Finals by defeating the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, 108–92, on Wednesday, June 2, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Jordan Heading led from the front and recorded his best game for TNT, finishing with a game-high 23 points, six rebounds, and five assists—13 of those points coming in the fourth quarter. He received solid support from Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser, who contributed a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds.

However, the victory came at a cost for TNT, who saw their injury list grow after losing star players Calvin Oftana and Kelly Williams during the game. Notably, they had already entered the game without the services of Rey Nambatac and Roger Pogoy—posing a major headache for Tropang Giga head coach Chot Reyes.

Pogoy’s status remains uncertain due to a hamstring injury, while both Oftana and Williams suffered ankle injuries.

“Oftana already twisted it in the first quarter. It’s basically wear and tear. He is playing for Gilas, so he is not getting any rest. We are just trying to manage it as much as we can, trying to cover for him defensively because we know he is not going to have the legs. It’s officially a sprained ankle, but we still don’t know how bad it is,” Reyes said after the game.

“I saw Williams’ injury happen in front of me—it’s really bad. But these guys are tough. Hopefully, with a couple of days’ rest, he’ll be okay, but I don’t think he can play,” he added.

Reyes also expressed concern that his team may not have enough personnel to go all the way in the tournament, as depth is already stretched thin.

“I’m only concerned if we have enough men, because we are just falling like flies. We lost Kelly today, Calvin as well. But just as it has been since Day 1—not only this conference but the entire season—whoever we have, it’s next man up. Going into the next game, that is my only concern: who do we have, and how can I make the best use of whoever we have left? We have to overcome that. We have to be ready. We have no choice. There’s nothing we can do. Injuries are part of the game; we don’t want them, but they happen,” Reyes concluded.

Despite the bad news regarding injuries to key players, Reyes must be pleased with the fight shown by his team. In addition to Heading and Ganuelas-Rosser, the likes of Poy Erram, Glenn Khobuntin, Henry Galinato, Kim Aurin, and Brian Heruela all stepped up in what was a collective effort.

TNT needs just one more win to progress to the Philippine Cup Finals as they chase the elusive Grand Slam of PBA titles. They will aim to secure that when they face Rain or Shine in Game 5 on Friday, July 4, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
