TNT suffered a setback as Poy Erram sustained a right ankle sprain in Game 2 of the PBA Finals

The San Miguel Beermen bounced back from a controversial Game 1 loss to level the ongoing Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup Finals series by defeating the TNT Tropang Giga, 98–92, in Game 2 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday, July 16.

In addition to the loss, TNT were dealt a major blow when they lost center Poy Erram in the second half due to a right ankle injury. Erram went down after spraining his ankle early in the third quarter.

The veteran center suffered the injury at the 9:04 mark of the third period after landing awkwardly while contesting a shot from San Miguel’s June Mar Fajardo. The 36-year-old struggled to get back on his feet and had to be helped to the bench by teammates.

Erram eventually left the Smart Araneta Coliseum in a wheelchair and confirmed to reporters that he would have his ankle checked.

“Bukas ako magpapa-X-ray. Namamaga talaga eh. Di pa sure eh. Di ko nga siya maitapak eh. Sobrang sakit,” Erram told reporters.

(“I’ll get an X-ray tomorrow. It’s really swollen. Still not sure. I can’t even put weight on it. It’s very painful.”)

Erram had played only 15 minutes before the injury, posting six points, two rebounds, three assists, and three blocks. His absence in the paint was clearly felt by TNT.

The Tropang Giga can ill afford to lose another key player, as they’ve already been plagued by injuries throughout the Philippine Cup. Jayson Castro and Rey Nambatac remain out due to injuries, while Calvin Oftana and Jordan Heading are playing through pain. Roger Pogoy and Kelly Williams only recently returned to action after missing several games in the semifinal series against the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters.

Erram will have little time to recover, with the pivotal Game 3 scheduled for Friday, July 18, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
