The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), Asia’s first professional basketball league and the second-oldest in the world after the NBA, continues to grow in popularity as it approaches its 50th season.

Reverting to a three-conference format in Season 49 proved to be a successful move for the league, with authorities reporting a significant increase in revenues. The PBA announced that it earned a net revenue of ₱193 million in the 2024–25 season, a 69 percent jump from the previous year’s ₱114 million.

The figure comes close to the league’s all-time high of ₱200 million in Season 47, when Barangay Ginebra San Miguel’s Game 7 win over the Bay Area Dragons in the Commissioner’s Cup finals drew a record crowd of 54,589 at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan.

PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial expressed satisfaction with the strong numbers.

“We drew solid numbers, and I believe we were able to deliver what we wanted to do as always—entertain the fans. We are happy and grateful,” Marcial said.

PBA Chairman Ricky Vargas, who along with Marcial was elected to a ninth term, acknowledged the challenge of sustaining the momentum heading into the league’s golden anniversary.

“The challenge is the 50th season. It’s going to be difficult to duplicate the ₱193 million net revenue or the ₱547 million gross. We can probably do better in gross, but expenses will be a little bit higher, so the net may be affected,” Vargas noted.

Vice Chairman Alfrancis Chua also credited Ninoy Aquino Stadium as a venue that helped boost attendance figures.

“We almost reached our highest net of ₱200 million back in Season 47,” Chua said.

Television partner Cignal/TV5 likewise reported higher viewership numbers in the past season. The league’s cumulative audience reach hit 22.7 million for the Governors’ Cup, 23.7 million for the Commissioner’s Cup, and 21.2 million for the Philippine Cup—significant gains compared to the 16.9 million and 13.7 million tallied in the Commissioner’s Cup and Philippine Cup, respectively, in 2023–24.

With its 50th season on the horizon, the PBA aims to build on its strong showing in Season 49 while marking a historic milestone for Philippine basketball.
