Terrence Romeo set for 3×3 return in FIBA Manila Challenger as PBA future remains uncertain

Terrence Romeo is making a sensational return to 3×3 basketball, suiting up for Manila Melmac in the FIBA 3×3 Manila Challenger, happening September 20–21 at Ayala Malls Manila Bay in Parañaque.

The fleet-footed 5-foot-11 guard last graced the half-court scene a full decade ago with Manila West in the World Tour, also staged on home soil. His comeback has been made possible through the support of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, driven by executive director Erika Dy, and Melmac Sports founder Mel Macasaquit.

“Unang-una, tumawag sa akin si Kuya Mel na kung puwede akong maglaro sa 3×3. … kung para sa bayan maglalaro ako… I’m available kapag kailangan ako,” Romeo said during practice in Mandaluyong. “Ten years ago na iyong last na laro ko sa 3×3 and excited ako ulit na maglaro para sa country natin.”

But there’s more to this story. Romeo’s return to 3×3 comes at a crucial time: he is currently an unrestricted free agent. His contract with the Terrafirma Dyip expired earlier this year, and the team has opted not to renew it—making him one of the most intriguing names in the 2025 PBA free-agency market.

Despite receiving offers abroad, Romeo has made it clear that playing in the PBA remains his top priority. The wheels are already turning. In fact, Barangay Ginebra head coach Tim Cone hasn’t completely ruled out exploring a potential addition of Romeo to the Gin Kings’ roster.

Romeo will team up with Mac Tallo, Abdul Sawat, and Henry Iloka under the direction of head coach Chico Lanete. The 33-year-old guard insists that fans can expect nothing but his best.

“Asahan ng fans na ibibigay ko iyong best ko… Gagawin ko iyong best ko para makatulong sa team and hopefully, makuha namin iyong goal namin.”

This 3×3 stint could serve as both a competitive platform for national pride and a strategic showcase as he navigates his PBA future.

Romeo’s 3×3 roots trace back to 2014, when he became one of the faces of Manila West alongside Calvin Abueva, Aldrech Ramos, and Vic Manuel. The team made waves in the FIBA 3×3 World Tour Manila Masters, stunning higher-ranked squads and advancing to the World Tour Final in Tokyo.

Known for his dazzling handles and fearless scoring, Romeo quickly emerged as a fan favorite, drawing comparisons to the streetball flair that the half-court format thrives on.

In his limited but impactful 3×3 stint, Romeo helped put the Philippines on the global map, leading Manila West to memorable victories—including a thrilling upset of Doha to clinch a World Tour Final berth.
