The Philippine women’s volleyball national team is set to be in action soon as they prepare to compete in the upcoming 2025 Southeast Asian Volleyball League, scheduled to run from August 1 to 3.

Alas head coach Jorge Souza de Brito admitted that finalizing the team’s 14-player lineup is one of the toughest decisions he has had to make, but he welcomes the challenge and calls it a blessing.

“This is the kind of hard decision every coach wants. We are just trying to make the best combination with the talented ones — the good ones, the experienced ones. It’s good, and as of now, we’re going to start this. Tomorrow, we are going to have some tune-ups again to evaluate them as a team,” De Brito said during a media interaction.

The likes of Brooke Van Sickle, Angel Canino, Bella Belen, Eya Laure, Vanie Gandler, Shaina Nitura, and Alleiah Malaluan are among the top outside hitters currently training, and the race to be picked is getting tougher by the minute.

De Brito reiterated that he is pleased with how quickly the players have adapted to his tactical system.

“They are doing really well. It’s amazing to see all these talented players together with good setters. The chemistry between the spikers is really good, and their connection in receiving is solid. They are adapting really well and fast,” he added.

Alas Pilipinas has enjoyed a good run under the Brazilian tactician, delivering impressive performances in the AVC Women’s Nations Cup and VTV Cup, but De Brito is aiming for steady growth rather than immediate results.

“The main expectation is always for us to keep growing. Results are a consequence of hard work. We know we have a chance to fight for bronze or even make the finals, but it’s going to be tough. This lineup is good, but we need to keep improving as a team. It’s a process — and in that process, you have to win against yourself every single day,” De Brito concluded.

The women’s national squad will continue training and playing tune-up games before flying to Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand on July 29 for SEA V.League Leg 1, which starts on August 1.
