Stephen Curry eyes spot in NBA all-time top 10 scorers list

Golden State Warriors icon Stephen Curry is widely recognized as one of the greatest players in National Basketball Association (NBA) history and is credited with revolutionizing the way the sport is played.

Curry has achieved virtually everything in the NBA and is often referred to as the “greatest shooter” in league history. The 36-year-old has won four championship rings during his career, yet he continues to pursue another league title.

The superstar shooting guard is not known for chasing individual records and accolades, but in a recent interview with Complex, he revealed there is one NBA record that lingers at the back of his mind.

That record refers to the NBA’s all-time scoring list, with Curry recently passing Naismith Hall of Famer and Los Angeles Lakers icon Jerry West to move to 24th on the list.

“I wouldn’t say I don’t care. I do the math every once in a while. Every time you catch somebody and they do the thing in the arenas like, ‘Oh, congratulations, you passed Jerry West,’ which was a special one for me — that’s when you’re like, oh, how far can I go?” Curry said.

“So I do the math. If I average 20-something points, two and a half seasons, I’m playing 70 games, I do that math all the time just to get in your head how long you have to play and at what level to catch the top of that list,” he added.

As it stands, Curry currently boasts 25,386 career points and needs 819 points to crack the top 20, and 1,324 to move up to No. 15. He sits 24th on the all-time scoring list, and of the 23 players ahead of him, only four are still active: LeBron James (No. 1), Kevin Durant (No. 8), James Harden (No. 11), and Russell Westbrook (No. 20).

However, the 36-year-old reiterated that numbers and milestones are not what motivate him, and that his primary goal is to win another NBA championship.

“But after I do that, I don’t think about it again until the next time it happens. So it’s just a fun way to keep yourself in the moment and give yourself, for a hot second, something to look forward to. But that’s not why I will keep going. It’s more that I want to get to a level where we are competing and playing for championships,” Curry concluded.

At a minimum, Curry will aim to break into the top 10 of the NBA’s all-time scoring list, which would require him to surpass Carmelo Anthony, who retired with 28,289 points — meaning Curry needs to score at least 2,903 more points in his career.
