Stefanie Berberabe etched her name in Philippine basketball history after delivering a performance for the ages, recording the first-ever quadruple-double in the Women’s Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (WMPBL) last Sunday at the Batangas City Coliseum.
Just a week after tallying a triple-double, the dynamic guard raised the bar even higher, putting up 20 points, 15 rebounds, 10 assists, and 10 steals to power Tagaytay-Tol to an 82-70 victory over Pangasinan-Solar Home.
It was a night to remember not only for Berberabe but also for the Patriots, who earned sweet redemption after losing a close 79-76 battle to the Suns in the first round of the tournament.
Logging nearly 38 minutes of action in only her second game with the squad, the former National University star showcased her all-around brilliance and relentless motor. The historic stat line was sealed with 2:20 left in the fourth quarter, when Berberabe picked off a bailout pass from Stifanny Larrosa to Ara Abaca after Larrosa got trapped in the corner.
That steal not only completed her quadruple-double but also cemented Tagaytay-Tol’s second consecutive win after opening the season with four straight losses.
Her achievement placed her among an exclusive group of Filipino professionals who have ever accomplished the feat. Before Berberabe, only Donbel Belano — who posted 17 points, 11 rebounds, 11 assists, and 10 steals for Davao against Nueva Ecija in the MBA on August 14, 1999 — and Kyt Jimenez, who exploded for 33 points, 13 rebounds, 11 assists, and 11 steals for Sarangani in the MPBL on October 10, 2022, had registered quadruple-doubles in local professional leagues.
Adding to the significance of the milestone was the fact that it came right on the heels of another standout performance.
Just a week earlier, Berberabe had already proven her versatility with 13 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists in Tagaytay-Tol’s 91-63 rout of RK Hoops-Quezon City.
For Berberabe, though, the accomplishment was never about personal numbers, but about the collective effort of the team.
“It’s an honor,” said the 5-foot-4 guard, who previously played for the Joondalup Wolves in Australia’s NBL1, shortly after the win.
“It feels good, I definitely wouldn’t have done it without my teammates and coaches. My teammates make it easy to play on the court with them. They make it fun. So it’s just fun to play out here,” she added.
