Stanley Pringle aims to bring championship experience to Rain or Shine’s title quest

Stanley Pringle is back in familiar territory — playing for a contender. After a short stint with Terrafirma, the veteran guard has rejoined a playoff-caliber squad, suiting up for Rain or Shine as the Elasto Painters prepare for their 50th PBA season.

For a team that reached the semifinals in all three conferences last year but couldn’t break through to the finals, Pringle’s arrival provides both experience and a proven winning pedigree. The 38-year-old was a four-time champion with Barangay Ginebra and once named Best Player of the Conference in the 2020 Philippine Cup bubble.

“Definitely, a great group of guys, young guys led by coach Yeng [Guiao]. I’m looking to come in and help the team as much as I can, help wherever I can fit in especially in the playoffs because they’ve been in the semifinals three times in the past three conferences. I’m just looking to step in and do what I can do to try help the team win,” Pringle said after Rain or Shine’s tune-up game against NLEX.

Though he signed with the team in July, Pringle only linked up with his new teammates this week, easing into Guiao’s system while the team carefully manages his workload given his past injuries.

“He’s been practicing with us for three days but he is participating in at least two of our scrimmages. We are managing his minutes. He is still not 100 percent of course. Parang ginagamay at ina-absorb pa lang niya ‘yung sistema namin,” said Guiao, who previously coached Pringle with Gilas Pilipinas at the 2018 Asian Games.

Pringle flashed his scoring touch with Terrafirma last season, averaging 13.0 points along with 4.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists per outing. Now, he joins a deep Rain or Shine backcourt anchored by Adrian Nocum, aiming to complement the youthful core with his veteran savvy.

For now, Pringle is focused on building chemistry and finding his niche.

“That depends on how we gel as a team. Me, I just got here last week. As far as my role right now, it’s about team chemistry. We are going to have a team building and got to find chemistry there. There is going to be steps first before you could just come and say, ‘This is my role in the team.’ I’ve got to gel with the guys, got to practice more than a couple of days,” he explained.

Still, his sights are clear — to help Rain or Shine finally push past the semifinals and chase the championship that has eluded them.

“They’ve been contending for championships the past three conferences. They’ve been in the semis. Getting to the semis is a challenge alone. I’m looking to hopefully help them out even more,” Pringle said.
