Shai Gilgeous-Alexander: Thunder targeting Warriors’ single-season wins record

The Oklahoma City Thunder are off to a scorching start in the 2025-26 NBA season, following their dominant 24–2 run that has put them on course to defend their 2024-25 title.

Undoubtedly the league’s hottest team this season, the Thunder have been led by star and reigning NBA Most Valuable Player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who is chasing yet another milestone: the NBA single-season wins record.

Currently, the record is held by the 2015-16 Golden State Warriors with 73 victories, eclipsing the Chicago Bulls’ 72-win campaign from 1995-96.

“Absolutely. Winning matters. And no matter what form it looks like to me. So absolutely,” Gilgeous-Alexander told ESPN.

Before falling 109–111 to the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Cup semifinal on Sunday, December 14 (Philippine Standard Time), the Thunder had won 16 straight games and were eyeing the 33-game win streak set by the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers.

Despite chasing historic milestones, Gilgeous-Alexander emphasized that championships remain the team’s ultimate goal.

“We are trying to be a better version of ourselves every night we go out there, and we like to hunt in that form. If we didn’t get better tonight, then we wasted an opportunity. That’s kind of how we see it,” he said.

The NBA Cup remains the one trophy that has eluded this talented Thunder roster, having fallen to the Milwaukee Bucks in last year’s final and now losing to the Spurs in the semifinals.

“The defeat stings, but it wasn’t our night on the court. We can’t be spoiled. We can’t think we are above anything. Us, along with every team in the league, if you show up on a night and don’t do the necessary thing to win, you probably won’t win, no matter how talented or no matter what your record looks like. That was the case for us tonight,” Gilgeous-Alexander added.

The Thunder will aim to return to winning ways when they host the Los Angeles Clippers at the Paycom Center on Friday, December 19 (Philippine Standard Time).
