Alas Pilipinas Women opened their 33rd Southeast Asian Games beach volleyball campaign with grit and drama, outlasting Indonesia in a golden match thriller to claim a 2–1 victory on Friday at Sport Arena Jomtien Beach in Chonburi, Thailand.

Veteran duo Sisi Rondina and Bernadeth Pons delivered under peak pressure, shaking off a flat opening set before roaring back to take the decider, 15-21, 21-16, 18-16. Their poise in the extended third frame set the tone for what became a strong and eventful Day 3 for Team Philippines.

Earlier, Sunny Villapando and Dij Rodriguez nearly secured a sweep but faltered late, yielding 21-12, 19-21, 15-13 and forcing the golden match that Rondina and Pons later salvaged. Alas Pilipinas Beach returns to action on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. (Manila time) against Singapore, hoping to ride the momentum of their clutch opening win.

Beyond the sands, the Philippines made noise across several fronts — including a pair of standout victories that bolstered the country’s medal hopes.

The Philippine men’s baseball team delivered one of the country’s most commanding performances so far, clinching the gold medal after overpowering host Thailand in a 5-3 win behind a sharp and steady outing. The Filipinos jumped to a 3–0 lead in the first three innings and never allowed the Thais to mount a rally.

With this year’s gold medal, it marks the fourth time the Filipino booters have won out of the five times men’s baseball has been staged in the history of the SEA Games.

Sustained pitching discipline and airtight defense ensured complete control from start to finish, securing a signature SEA Games triumph and affirming the squad’s rise as one of the delegation’s bright spots.

In jiu-jitsu, debutant Andrea Lois Lao impressed in her first multi-sport event appearance, capturing bronze in the women’s -63kg division at the Ronnaphakat Building in Bangkok. Lao’s run for the gold ended in the semifinals against Thailand’s Senatham Orapa, but her composed showing added to the Philippines’ podium tally.

Her medal pushed the national jiu-jitsu team’s haul to nine overall — two golds, one silver, and six bronzes — solidifying the squad as one of the delegation’s most productive units at the Games.

On the tennis courts, Arthur Craig “Iggy” Pantino continued his bid to bring the Philippines back to the men’s finals, gutting out a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win over Indonesia’s Justin Barki at the National Tennis Development Center in Nonthaburi.

Pantino emphasized the team’s urgency, saying they hope to “finish quickly to focus on the finals” as the stakes rise. Teammate Albert Lim Jr. remains locked in battle with Indonesia’s M. Fitriadi, with a win securing the Philippines at least a silver medal and a coveted berth in the gold-medal showdown.

The Philippine women’s tennis team also contributed to the Day 3 tally by securing bronze after bowing to Thailand in the semifinals.

Tennielle Madis and Shaira Rivera absorbed straight-sets defeats in singles, ending a spirited campaign that previously saw Rivera and Alexa Milliam deliver a clutch three-set doubles victory over Vietnam to reach the knockout stage.

It marked the squad’s second bronze in the last three SEA Games.

Gymnast Aleah Finnegan, meanwhile, added another gold to the Philippines’ growing collection by capturing the women’s vault title in a tightly contested final — underscoring her reputation as one of Team Philippines’ most dependable finishers.

Across Thailand, Filipino athletes maintained a steady rhythm of breakthroughs, resilience, and podium-worthy performances. With golds secured, bronzes added, and key campaigns still alive, Team Philippines remains firmly in contention as the 33rd SEA Games enters a decisive phase.
