Scottie Thompson eager to face rising star Juan Gomez de Liaño in quarterfinals

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel guard Scottie Thompson said he is excited for a highly anticipated matchup against Converge’s dynamic rookie point guard Juan Gomez de Liaño as the Gin Kings enter the PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals.

Thompson described Gomez de Liaño as a talented and veteran-like opponent despite his first-season status, saying the Converge floor general makes those around him better.

“He plays like a vet, and he makes his teammates better. That’s what good about him,” Thompson said.

“I’m excited to go up against him. He’s like a ‘Point God,’ he fits well in the system he’s in (now) but I think, wherever you put him, he can fit right in easily. That’s what he is,” Thompson added.

Juan Gómez de Liaño was again named the PBA Rookie of the Week after putting up another triple-double of 20 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists on top of 4 steals in a crucial overtime win over Nlex.

Ginebra earned its quarterfinal berth following a hard-fought 102-100 victory over Rain or Shine in the final game of the eliminations, with Thompson contributing 16 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

In their first meeting this season during the eliminations, Converge defeated Ginebra 106-96 behind a standout performance from Gomez de Liaño, who recorded 32 points, six rebounds, and six assists. 

Thompson was held to a modest stat line in that game but has been a long-time cornerstone of the Gin Kings and one of the PBA’s premier all-around players, and has still shown consistent production this season, helping Ginebra finish the eliminations with a 7-4 record.

Converge’s Gomez de Liaño has drawn attention leaguewide for his scoring and playmaking despite being a rookie, and the upcoming matchup is shaping up as one of the quarterfinals’ standout storylines.

Ginebra will face Converge in the PBA’s Christmas Day main event at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
