Schonny Winston, Converge settle contract drama with two-year max extension

After weeks of tension between player and management, Converge FiberXers guard Schonny Winston has reached an agreement with the team, securing his future with a lucrative deal despite earlier threats of sanctions.

The former De La Salle standout has signed a two-year extension worth the PBA maximum salary of ₱420,000 per month, multiple sources confirmed. Winston’s original rookie contract was due to expire on September 17, making the deal a crucial move for both sides.

The new agreement follows a rocky stretch that saw Winston embroiled in controversy during the recently concluded Kadayawan Invitational Basketball Tournament in Davao where the NLEX Road Warriors won against Blackwater Bossing 101-84 in the finals.

Reports surfaced that the guard “refused to play” in three consecutive games despite being cleared by team doctors after returning from the United States.

This prompted the Dennis Uy-owned franchise to prepare an indefinite suspension without pay, citing insubordination and “conduct detrimental to the team.”

Had the suspension been enforced, Winston risked forfeiting as much as ₱230,000 in salary with his deal close to expiry.

Instead, Converge and Winston chose to resolve the dispute, ensuring the young Fil-Am guard remains a key piece in the FiberXers’ rebuild.

Since being drafted by Converge in the 2023 PBA Rookie Draft, Winston has steadily carved out a reputation as one of the league’s rising stars.

He made an immediate impact in his debut season, showing flashes of scoring brilliance with his smooth midrange game and ability to create off the dribble.

By his sophomore year, he emerged as a vital offensive weapon, averaging 16 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.8 assists during the 2025 Philippine Cup.

Winston’s athleticism and shot-making have drawn comparisons to some of the league’s premier guards, while his college pedigree with La Salle gave him a ready-made fan base.

However, his young career has not been without challenges—nagging injuries and now off-court drama briefly clouded his trajectory.

With his future now secured under a max deal, the FiberXers are betting on Winston to anchor their backcourt for the next two seasons.

The 24-year-old guard is expected to continue developing into one of the PBA’s most dynamic scorers, while also proving he can move past controversy to become a long-term cornerstone for Converge.
