San Miguel’s Don Trollano named Mr. Quality Minutes by PBA Press Corps

The San Miguel Beermen reaffirmed their dominance in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) after clinching the 2024–25 Philippine Cup title with a 107–96 win over the TNT Tropang Giga in Game 6 at the Philsports Arena on Friday, July 25.

The championship marked San Miguel’s seventh Philippine Cup title in the last 10 editions, solidifying their status as one of the league’s most successful franchises.

While the Beermen’s star power once again led the charge, it was the consistent contributions of Don Trollano—a typically unheralded role player—that made a significant difference throughout the Finals and the playoffs. Usually coming off the bench, the 33-year-old guard played a pivotal role in San Miguel’s title run, delivering clutch performances whenever called upon by head coach Leo Austria.

For his efforts, Trollano is set to be honored with the Mr. Quality Minutes award at the 31st Annual PBA Press Corps Awards Night on Monday, October 13, at Novotel Manila. The award, considered the PBA’s equivalent of the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year, recognizes the league’s top impact player off the bench.

Trollano averaged 9.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.2 assists during the campaign—mostly in limited minutes—and becomes the sixth San Miguel player to receive the honor, joining the ranks of Bong Alvarez, the late Boybits Victoria, Chris Calaguio, Terrence Romeo, and Jericho Cruz.

“This is the result of so many hours of hard work and consistency,” Trollano said in response to the recognition.

The awards night will also celebrate the league’s rising stars. RJ Abarrientos of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel headlines the All-Rookie Team as the Rookie of the Year, following a standout debut season. Joining him on the team are: Sedrick Barefield (Blackwater Bossing),
Caelan Tiongson (Rain or Shine Elasto Painters), Kai Ballungay (Phoenix Fuel Masters),
Jordan Heading (TNT Tropang Giga / Converge FiberXers), and Justin Baltazar (Converge FiberXers).

While Heading and Baltazar fell short of the minimum 70% games played requirement, both were selected based on their significant impact on their respective teams.

Earlier in the week, Arvin Tolentino was named PBA Scoring Champion, while Calvin Oftana was recognized with the Order of Merit, capping off a memorable season of individual and team accomplishments.
