“Right time to explore”: Alyssa Valdez shares why she joined PBB Season 10

Widely regarded as the greatest volleyball player the Philippines has ever produced, Alyssa Valdez has become an icon—not only for her brilliance on the court with Alas Pilipinas and the Creamline Cool Smashers, but also for her remarkable impact on the sport’s growing popularity in the country.

Now 32, Valdez is a household name and a beacon of inspiration for young athletes nationwide. Yet, while fans know her as a fierce competitor and a leader in Philippine volleyball, few have truly seen the woman behind the jersey.

In 2021, Valdez surprised many when she joined Season 10 of Pinoy Big Brother (PBB), spending nearly three months inside the famous house. Despite making it to the Top 2 of the celebrity housemates, she had to voluntarily exit the show to fulfill her commitments with the national team.

In a recent interview, Valdez reflected on her decision to participate in the reality show, revealing that it came during a time of personal uncertainty brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“At that time, we had no training, and I kept thinking, ‘What else can I do? They had asked me several times to join PBB,” Valdez shared.

“One of the main reasons I agreed was because of the pandemic. People were asking, ‘If there’s no volleyball, who are you?’ It made me reflect: What’s my identity outside the sport?”

Valdez’s stint in the PBB house became more than just a TV appearance—it was a journey of self-discovery. She formed deep friendships with fellow housemates and came to appreciate how her background in sports had shaped her values and mindset.

“I enjoyed PBB. I still keep in touch with friends I made in the house. What I realized is that sports taught me so much,” she said.

“As an athlete, I’m used to competing—even against my friends. It’s healthy competition. But not everyone sees it that way. Some people take it emotionally, and that surprised me. It really highlighted how much character and discipline sports has given me.”

Though she left the show early, many viewers and fans still regard Alyssa as the “uncrowned Big Winner” of her PBB season. She was never nominated for eviction and remained one of the most well-loved contestants throughout her stay.

Despite stepping into unfamiliar territory, Valdez’s PBB journey revealed yet another layer to her identity: one not just defined by volleyball accolades, but by personal growth, emotional strength, and the ability to inspire—both on and off the court.
