Revenge fueling Melvin Jerusalem in hopes of getting Oscar Collazo rematch

After a successful title defense of his World Boxing Council (WBC) Strawweight crown against Siyakholwa Kuse in Thrilla in Manila, Melvin Jerusalem is fueled by revenge as he eyes a rematch with World Boxing Organization (WBO) champion Oscar Collazo.

For Jerusalem, the chance to avenge his 2023 loss to Collazo serves as fuel for his emerging boxing career.

“Just thinking about it pumps me up,” Jerusalem told the Daily Tribune. “I really hope it happens because I know that this time, I will be much prepared, unlike the last time.”

Collazo captured the World Boxing Organization (WBO) title from Jerusalem in 2023, after the Filipino was unable to stand up for the seventh round.

Jerusalem said the loss was also due to ill-advised fight preparations following a late arrival to the US before the fight.

“In our first fight, I was still jet-lagged because I arrived in the US just nine days before the fight,” said Jerusalem. “I would love to get back at him.”

The loss to Collazo halted Jerusalem’s seven-fight winning streak at that time and sparked a career revival that led to Jerusalem grabbing the WBC title from Yudai Shigeoka.

However, he isn’t the only Filipino who wants to unify the Strawweight titles against Collazo.

International Boxing Federation (IBF) king Pedro Taduran is also vying to face Collazo after his win against fellow Filipino Christian Balunan in the lead-up to Thrilla in Manila.

Whether Taduran or Jerusalem faces Collazo next, the Strawweight division will undoubtedly get its undisputed champion in the near future.
