Raymond Aguilar shines in rare quality minutes for Ginebra in Game 1: “I really embraced my role”

In a playoff game where every possession mattered, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel’s veteran big man Raymond Aguilar stepped up to the plate, delivering crucial minutes and pivotal plays that helped the Gin Kings secure a hard-fought 73-71 Game 1 victory over the San Miguel Beermen in their PBA Philippine Cup semifinals series.

Aguilar, a fan favorite often seen on the bench, received unexpected extended playing time in Wednesday night’s opener, especially in the second period when main man Japeth Aguilar encountered early foul trouble. And he didn’t waste the opportunity.

“It’s just another day in the office,” Aguilar humbly stated after the game. “This is our job, that when we come in, we really have to provide energy. Japeth got into foul trouble early, so it’s good that I was able to step up.”

The 38-year-old big man finished with 6 points, a rebound, and a block in just over eight minutes of action, but his impact went beyond the stat sheet. Aguilar’s energy on both ends of the floor was instrumental in sparking Ginebra’s comeback from an 18-point deficit, which saw them trail 25-43 in the second quarter.

He provided a much-needed defensive presence, particularly against reigning eight-time MVP June Mar Fajardo, making things challenging for the Beermen’s dominant center.

“June Mar Fajardo, that’s an eight-time MVP,” Aguilar quipped, showing his respect for his formidable opponent. “It’s good he didn’t go at me too much.”

For a player who typically sees limited minutes, Aguilar’s readiness and professionalism are a testament to his dedication. He acknowledged that his role on the team might not always involve significant playing time, but that doesn’t deter him from staying prepared.

“In-embrace ko talaga ang role ko,” he emphasized, meaning “I truly embraced my role.” He continued, “Kung magamit o hindi, stay ready lang.

Hindi naman ako nagpapabaya. Conditioning everyday. I guess ready lang talaga ako kung anong mangyari, especially nasa playoffs na tayo.” (Whether I get to play or not, I just stay ready. I don’t slack off. I do conditioning every day. I guess I’m just really ready for whatever happens, especially since we’re in the playoffs.)

Coach Tim Cone also lauded Aguilar’s performance and that of the entire bench mob, highlighting their vital contributions to the 18-point comeback. Cone noted that while Japeth Aguilar was dealing with fouls, they had planned defensive schemes involving Raymond, Troy Rosario, and Ben Adamos to guard Fajardo.

“And he did more than that,” Cone said of Raymond. “He moved the ball, got some shots, and he was definitely our best player off the bench.”

Raymond Aguilar’s performance in Game 1 serves as a timely reminder of the importance of every player on a championship-contending team. His unwavering commitment to his role, regardless of minutes, proved invaluable in a crucial playoff opener, showcasing why he remains a respected and beloved figure for Barangay Ginebra.

As the series progresses, his readiness could once again be a key factor for the Gin Kings.
