Rain or Shine’s injury woes continue after Keith Datu injury

The Rain or Shine Elastopainters continue to lose depth, with big man Keith Datu being the latest player to be sidelined due to injury.

Datu went down in the third quarter of their game against the Phoenix Fuelmasters with an apparent knee injury.

The 29-year-old tallied nine points, four rebounds, and three assists before he left as Rain or Shine extended their winning streak to four games.

Datu’s injury further dampens the Elastopainters’ big man rotation with Caelan Tiongson out and veteran Beau Belga still on a minutes restriction due to vertigo.

High-scoring guard Stanley Pringle is also unable to suit up for Rain or Shine due to his lingering knee soreness.

Head coach Yeng Guiao shared that Datu had been dealing with problems in his knee for a while and has yet to know the severity of his injury.

“Hindi ko pa alam exactly kung ano status niya, kung how serious the injury is. But he’s already been having issues with his knees even before. Kaya nga ‘yun ‘yung focus namin, to strengthen his lower body,” he said.

Guiao lamented the Elastopainters’ injury rotations and joked that he may start fielding an all-guard lineup while their frontcourt recovers.

“Mahirap kasi na minamanage namin minutes ni Beau, tapos si Keith nagka-problema ngayon, tapos si Caelan na-injure din. Baka puro guwardiya na lang ilaro namin eh ‘no, pagka ganoon,” he said.

Despite the injuries, Rain or Shine sits atop the Philippine Cup standings with a 5-1 win-loss slate.

They will face the sturdy NLEX Road Warriors at the Ynares Center in Antipolo on Saturday, Nov. 8, at 7:30 p.m.
