The Chery Tiggo Crossovers, a mainstay in Philippine volleyball for over a decade, shocked the local volleyball community on Tuesday, December 3, after announcing their withdrawal from the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) and the disbandment of their franchise. The announcement immediately made the team’s roster free agents.
Despite the sudden exit, PVL president Ricky Palou expressed confidence that the league’s operations and competitiveness will remain intact, even as Chery Tiggo becomes the second team to disband in less than three years, following the dissolution of F2 Logistics Cargo Movers in 2023.
“I don’t think there will be any adverse effect on the league,” Palou said during a media interaction.

The 77-year-old clarified that the decision to disband was purely an internal business move by Chery Tiggo and that there were no conflicts with the league.
“I think the Chery Tiggo management is pursuing a different marketing plan to promote its Foton and Chery Tiggo brands,” he added.
Chery Tiggo’s departure also opens the door for a new team to join the PVL, with the next conference—the All-Filipino Conference—scheduled for late January.
“If we have credible applicants for the 12th slot, we will entertain them,” Palou said.
While Chery Tiggo has not publicly disclosed the reasons behind its exit, one concern among PVL team owners was the previous Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) administration’s refusal to issue International Transfer Certificates (ITCs) for import players, which caused delays in player participation.
Palou expressed optimism that the recent election of Tony Boy Liao as PNVF president will foster a smoother relationship between the PVL and the national federation.
“One of the main complaints of our team owners is the refusal of the former PNVF management to issue ITCs for their respective imports. With a new management in place, we feel this won’t be a problem anymore,” Palou concluded.
