Veteran forward Gabe Norwood has officially announced his retirement from the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) at the conclusion of the ongoing 2025 Philippine Cup, bringing an end to a remarkable 17-year career in the league.
Norwood, a cornerstone of the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, has spent his entire PBA career with the franchise. Over the years, he has compiled an impressive list of accolades: two PBA championships, 2009 Rookie of the Year, 2010 Defensive Player of the Year, three-time PBA Sportsmanship Award winner, and 11-time PBA All-Star—solidifying his legacy as one of the most respected figures in Philippine basketball.
Among those proudest of Norwood’s career is his cousin, Alohi Robins-Hardy, the star setter for the Farm Fresh Foxies in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference. Speaking to the media, Robins-Hardy shared her emotions surrounding Norwood’s upcoming retirement.

“I’m just super proud, super sad as well. Lots of emotions,” she said. “He’s had such a successful time here, and I know he’s going to do great things afterward. Best of luck to him and his team.”
The 29-year-old PVL standout added that she plans to support Norwood by attending his remaining games, soaking in the final chapter of her cousin’s storied career.
“I’m going to try and make as many games as possible, knowing there’s going to be an end for him,” she continued. “But I’m stoked for him to just live his life with his family and his three boys. I’m excited for all of them.”
In a small but meaningful gesture, Robins-Hardy even debuted a new braided hairstyle as a nod to Norwood’s youngest son—whom she credits as the inspiration.
“Honestly, I haven’t done it in forever. But my cousin’s youngest boy always has braids, and I’ve always wanted to do my own hair. So I used their guy, Russel Gonzalez—he’s awesome. His braids are the best.”
“I’m just proud of everything Gabe has accomplished. It’s going to be emotional, but also a celebration of an amazing career and the man he is,” she concluded.
Despite Norwood’s intent to retire, Rain or Shine head coach Yeng Guiao revealed that he has encouraged the 40-year-old to reconsider, believing Norwood still has much to offer on and off the court.
“Gabe continues to be an important part of this team,” Guiao said. “We’re hoping he gives it another thought. But whatever he decides, he’s earned every bit of respect from this organization and this league.”
As Norwood nears his final PBA appearance, the basketball world reflects on a career built on consistency, professionalism, and quiet leadership—qualities that have made him a fan favorite and locker room pillar for nearly two decades.
