The Premier Volleyball League (PVL) is undoubtedly the most popular volleyball league in the Philippines, ranking only behind the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) in terms of fan following.
The surge in the PVL’s popularity has led to greater financial incentives for both players and management, with numerous sponsors eager to partner with the league to gain wider exposure.
In light of this, PVL authorities have announced a 10 percent increase in the minimum salary for the top four picks in the upcoming 2025 Rookie Draft. PVL Commissioner Sherwin Malonzo confirmed the development on Monday, May 26, emphasizing that these figures represent base amounts and not a salary cap.
“Currently, the PVL is not yet implementing a salary cap for players. However, the PVL follows a salary scale for rookies, with specific base amounts designated for each of the top four draft picks,” Malonzo stated during a media interaction.
In 2024, the minimum salary for the first overall pick was ₱150,000. This amount will now increase to at least ₱165,000. The second overall pick will receive ₱150,000, followed by ₱135,000 for the third overall pick, and ₱120,000 for the fourth.
The Capital1 Solar Spikers secured the first overall pick in the upcoming 2025 PVL Rookie Draft, during the draft lottery event held in Mandaluyong City on Monday, May 26. It is widely expected that they will select three-time University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Most Valuable Player (MVP) Bella Belen, who is considered the future of Philippine volleyball. However, Belen’s status remains uncertain, as she has yet to make a decision and is still weighing her options. She has until May 30–31 to withdraw her name from the draft.
As it stands, it will be up to the Capital1 Solar Spikers’ management to determine whether their No. 1 pick will earn the base salary or negotiate a higher figure, given the absence of a league-wide salary cap. The same will apply to the Galeries Tower Highrisers, Farm Fresh Foxies, and Nxled Chameleons, who hold the next three top picks.
