PSC designates Bukdnon training center as National boxers training hub

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) has officially designated the Bukidnon Sports and Cultural Complex as the Mindanao training hub for the Philippine national boxing team, marking a major step in decentralizing the country’s sports development program.

The move was formalized through a Memorandum of Agreement between the PSC and the Provincial Government of Bukidnon, ensuring that the state-of-the-art facility in Malaybalay will serve as a permanent training base for national athletes based in the region.

The sprawling 13-hectare complex features a wide range of world-class amenities, including an eight-lane track and field oval, football field, Olympic-size swimming and diving pools, a 15,000-seat stadium, and a 3,000-seat indoor gym suited for multiple sports such as basketball, martial arts, and badminton.

According to PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio, the initiative is part of the commission’s long-term plan to establish high-performance training centers outside Metro Manila.

“This is a significant step in giving equal opportunities to athletes across the country. Bukidnon’s facilities will allow our national boxers to train closer to home while enjoying world-class amenities,” Gregorio said.

The Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) also expressed its support for the move. ABAP Secretary-General Marcus Manalo emphasized that the setup would help young athletes train effectively without being uprooted from their hometowns.

“It’s not ideal for young boxers to be away from their families for long periods. This hub will help us train top-level athletes while allowing them to stay connected to their roots,” Manalo said.

The Bukidnon complex, a project strongly backed by Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri, is envisioned as a regional hub for multiple sports disciplines. Aside from boxing, the facility will also cater to other national federations, including sepak takraw, karate, and athletics.

“Imagine having training centers in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao — we can find and develop the best talents nationwide,” Zubiri said.

In the coming months, the PSC plans to roll out further developments at the complex, including tennis courts, a baseball diamond, and a cultural auditorium. These additions aim to transform Bukidnon into a full-fledged sports and cultural destination.
