The San Miguel Beermen bounced back from a controversial Game 1 loss to level the ongoing Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup Finals series by defeating the TNT Tropang Giga, 98–92, in Game 2 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday, July 16.
In addition to the loss, TNT suffered a major blow when center Poy Erram exited the game in the second half due to a right ankle injury. Erram went down early in the third quarter after spraining his ankle while contesting a shot from San Miguel’s June Mar Fajardo.
The 36-year-old struggled to get back on his feet and had to be helped to the bench by teammates. He eventually left the Smart Araneta Coliseum in a wheelchair and confirmed to reporters that he would have his ankle checked.
However, it’s bad news for TNT fans, as team manager Jojo Lastimosa confirmed that Erram is doubtful for Game 3, which is scheduled for Friday, July 18, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
“Being reevaluated. Most likely out for the next game,” Lastimosa told reporters.
With Erram likely to miss Game 3, Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser said TNT would have to rely on their next-man-up mentality.
“Next-man-up — that has been the mantra and the theme of this conference. Whoever is next in line, they’re just going to have to do their job. Hopefully, Poy can bounce back, but if not, we will be ready. June Mar is a different animal. We’re just making it as difficult as we can. This series is even right now, so we just have to make adjustments,” Ganuelas-Rosser added.
Erram is currently averaging 6.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.3 blocks per game in the Philippine Cup playoffs. His absence adds to the string of bad luck TNT has faced this conference regarding injuries.
The Tropang Giga can ill afford to lose another key player, as they’ve already been plagued by injuries throughout the Philippine Cup. Jayson Castro and Rey Nambatac remain out, while Calvin Oftana and Jordan Heading are playing through pain. Roger Pogoy and Kelly Williams only recently returned after missing several games in the semifinal series against the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters.
