POC president Abraham Tolentino says Alas’ historic FIVB win boosts sports tourism and the country’s global reputation

On a raucous Tuesday night at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, the Philippines etched its name in volleyball history. Alas Pilipinas Men shocked the African champion Egypt in four thrilling sets — 29–27, 23–25, 25–21, 25–21 — to claim their maiden victory at the FIVB Men’s World Championship and keep their knockout-stage hopes alive.

The triumph was more than just a scoreline. It marked the first time in the federation’s 64-year history that a Philippine men’s team not only competed but also triumphed on volleyball’s biggest stage.

Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino hailed the breakthrough, calling it both a “dream come true” and a major boost for the country’s growing sports tourism industry.

“It was a dream come true. These men have etched their names in volleyball history, and their victory will surely inspire and motivate the next generation to follow their example,” Tolentino told reporters.

“It’s all about setting goals and working hard to achieve them. It was a long shot — we never aimed that high for Alas Pilipinas in this world championship — but they overachieved. I commend the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) and the support of the entire sports community for this success.”

Tolentino also emphasized the collective effort behind the achievement.

“To build champions, it takes the entire community — the government, the Philippine Sports Commission, the private sector, the Filipino fan, to name a few. Two birds with one stone — we won on the world stage, and our sports tourism campaign received another major boost.”

The global spotlight on Manila is undeniable. Thirty-one of the world’s top volleyball teams, each with an entourage of about 50 staff, plus families and fans, have descended on the city for the tournament. The influx, Tolentino noted, strengthens the Philippines’ reputation as a premier Southeast Asian hub for international competitions.

“Sports tourism — this event is a solid platform to boost that campaign,” he added.

The Philippines has steadily positioned itself as a prime destination for international events. Following this historic volleyball feat, Manila will also host the inaugural FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup from November 21 to December 7, further cementing its status as a rising global sports stage.
