Candon City, Ilocos Sur is set to take center stage in Asian volleyball after securing the hosting rights for the 2026 AVC Women’s Volleyball Nations Cup.

The Philippines, which last hosted the event at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila in 2024, will bring the continental meet up north from June 6 to 14, 2026. The hosting rights were confirmed after Candon’s successful staging of the 5th Men’s SEA V.League earlier this year — the city’s first international volleyball competition.

For Alas Pilipinas Women, the tournament offers a golden chance to build on recent success and complete a medal hat-trick on home soil. The national squad bagged bronze in the 2024 edition and followed it up with a historic silver in Vietnam earlier this year.

The announcement was made in Bangkok, Thailand, where concurrent AVC and Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) president Ramon “Tats” Suzara, Candon City mayor Eric Singson, FIVB president Fabio Azevedo, and Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Patrick “Pato” Gregorio gathered at the AVC House.

Singson said the city is already preparing to upgrade its modern arena, which currently has an 8,000-spectator capacity.

“I think we will have to improve our arena to accommodate what is needed for these international games,” Singson said. “We are going to add two [locker] rooms for the players and we also plan to ask the private sector to put up another 40 rooms there nearby so that we will have more rooms for use for next year.

“I’m sure we will have a lot of guests coming from several places and in other countries. We have to be ready for that.”

Among the upgrades being considered are larger scoreboards, a jumbotron, and LED screens to further enhance the venue experience.

“Using volleyball as a product to sell in other countries will be good for our sport in the future,” Singson added. “It gives [Candon City and the Philippines in general] a lot of tourism interest from other countries.”

With the hosting locked in, Ilocos Sur now gears up to showcase world-class volleyball while boosting both local sports development and tourism.
