The Philippines is gearing up to host two major wushu events in consecutive years, marking a historic moment for the country’s martial arts community.
Wushu Federation of the Philippines (WFP) officials confirmed that the nation will welcome the 2027 World Wushu Championships and the 2028 Asian Wushu Championships, bringing together the best martial artists from across the globe and the continent.
At the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum, WFP president Freddie Jalasco and secretary general Julian Camacho said the back-to-back hosting reflects the country’s growing reputation as a reliable partner in staging international sporting events.
“Kinausap ako ng Wushu Federation of Asia, sabi nila since mag-host naman kayo ng 2027 World Championships, baka puwede na kayo mag host next year ng Asian Championships. So back-to-back ito. Sabi ko, OK,” Camacho shared.

The Philippines is targeting a ₱500-million budget for the world meet, which will feature over 2,000 athletes from 80 countries competing in both taolu (forms) and sanda (combat) events. Discussions are already underway to hold the competition at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, a venue familiar with hosting large-scale international tournaments.
Jalasco said preparations will begin early next year: “Magsisimula na kami ng aming mobilization by early next year. So we have to prepare everything to ensure the success of our hosting, kasi napakalaking event nito.”
Interestingly, the Philippines was initially slated to host the World Championships in 2029, but Camacho successfully arranged a switch with Macau.
“Sabi ko kasi I’m 82 now baka hindi na ako umabot ng 2029,” Camacho said with a laugh. “We’re friends (Macau) naman. So pumayag, nagpalit tayo ng hosting.”
For athletes like Carlos Baylon Jr., the country’s hosting adds motivation. The World Championships silver medalist and World Games bronze medalist said competing at home will come with pressure — but also pride.
“Pagsisikapan po natin sa training para makakuha tayo ng gold,” Baylon said. “Medyo may pressure sa aming mga atleta dahil tayo ang host, pero ipapakita natin sa ibang countries na malakas tayo.”
With its back-to-back international hosting, the Philippines isn’t just welcoming the world to its shores — it’s cementing its place as a global hub for wushu excellence.
