Philippines’ 3×3 medal streak ends as Gilas Men fall short in SEA Games

For years, the Philippines’ 3×3 program symbolized reliability — a steady source of SEA Games hardware since the discipline’s debut in 2019.

But in Bangkok, that long-running streak finally snapped, leaving Gilas 3×3 Men and Women heading home without a single medal in a stunning turn of events.

What began as a confident campaign — a clean sweep of pool play capped by a clinical 21-10 win over Laos — slowly transformed into a day of heartbreak.

The first shockwave came when Singapore edged the Filipinos, 21-20, in the semifinals, abruptly silencing what had looked like a legitimate title push.

Still reeling, Gilas faced Malaysia in the bronze-medal match at the Nimibutr Stadium. Control swung back and forth, but Malaysia carved out a 16-13 cushion that shifted the momentum for good.

The quartet of Ange Kouame, Joseph Sedurifa, Joseph Eriobu, and Janrey Pasaol made one final push, but the rally never fully materialized as Malaysia sealed a dramatic 21-19 win to claim bronze — and hand the Philippines its first-ever 3×3 medal shutout.

Gilas 3×3 Women had already bowed out earlier in the tournament, unable to advance past the group stage after dropping both of their matches.

As Thailand eventually secured men’s gold with a 21-18 win over Singapore, the Filipino delegation was left processing an unfamiliar emotion in this event: going home empty-handed.

The setback doesn’t erase Gilas’ past dominance in the format, nor the abundant talent within the program. But it does signal a region catching up — and a reminder that even long-standing powers can get caught in the tide of rapid change.
