Alas Pilipinas and Creamline Cool Smashers icon Alyssa Valdez needs no introduction. Widely regarded as the greatest volleyball player the Philippines has ever produced, Valdez has reached legendary status—not just for her dominance on the court, but also for her immense popularity on social media.

At 32, Valdez has become a household name and a major reason why volleyball in the country has grown to such heights. But while fans know her as a fierce competitor and inspiring leader, much less is known about her life off the court.

In an exclusive interview with The Game, Valdez opened up about her passions beyond volleyball. From trying out new sports like tennis and golf, to traveling, discovering new restaurants, and spending quality time with family and friends, she also makes sure to unwind with movies and TV shows.

Known as the “Phenom,” Valdez describes herself as “more of a series-person” and a true rom-com fan. Her all-time favorite rom-coms? Set It Up (2018), The Proposal (2009), and Just Go With It (2011).

When it comes to TV shows, Valdez’s nostalgia shines through. She fondly recalls binge-watching popular early-2000s series like One Tree Hill (2003) and Gossip Girl (2007). But like many Filipinos, she has a soft spot for K-dramas.

“Sobrang addict ako sa K-drama. High school pa lang, nanonood na ako, tapos sa college sa Ateneo, roommate ko sina Ella de Jesus at Dennis Lazaro-Revilla. Gina-judge nila ako kapag nanonood, kaya naka-mute na lang ako at binabasa ang subtitles. Look at them now—they watch K-dramas too,” she shared with a laugh.

Her favorite K-dramas include Dream High (2011), The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince (2007), and Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo (2016). Among the newer shows, she highly recommends Descendants of the Sun (2016), Twenty-Five Twenty-One (2022), and Lovely Runner (2024), calling them “unmissable.”

Even amid all the fame, endorsements, and records, Valdez remains down-to-earth and relatable. Her personal tastes—her love for rom-coms, series binges, and K-dramas—reveal a romantic side, showing that even the country’s top volleyball star enjoys the simple joys that many fans can relate to.

Alyssa Valdez isn’t just a legend on the court—she’s a fan, a traveler, a foodie, and a romantic at heart, proving that her greatness extends far beyond volleyball.
