Philadelphia 76ers star Paul George undergoes knee surgery amid long-term injury struggles

Philadelphia 76ers star Paul George underwent an arthroscopic procedure on his left knee on Monday, July 14 (Philippine Standard Time), to treat an injury he sustained during a recent workout.

Philadelphia’s management announced the news on social networking platform X (formerly known as Twitter), stating:

“Today, Paul George underwent a successful arthroscopic procedure on his left knee to treat an injury sustained during a recent workout. The procedure was performed by Dr. Jonathan L. Glashow at the NYU Langone Sports Medicine Orthopedic Center. George will now begin a rehabilitation program, and his progress will be monitored regularly. He will be re-evaluated prior to the start of training camp.”

George will be re-evaluated close to the start of training camp for the upcoming 2025–26 season. This comes after 76ers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey admitted that the team needs Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Paul George to be healthy in order to compete for an NBA title.

The 35-year-old joined Philadelphia last offseason in what was arguably the biggest trade of the summer, arriving from the Los Angeles Clippers after signing a four-year, $212 million maximum contract with the franchise. However, he struggled with lingering injuries in his debut season with the 76ers, limiting him to just 41 games—his fewest since the 2021–22 season. George averaged 16.2 points while shooting 43 percent from the field, his lowest since the 2014–15 season, when he returned from a previous knee injury.

The 76ers struggled last season, largely due to their “Big 3” suffering from injuries. Embiid played only 19 games, while Maxey was limited to 52. The trio of Embiid, Maxey, and George played just 15 games together—a major letdown for the franchise. As a result, the injury-ravaged team finished the regular season in the Eastern Conference with a 24–58 win-loss record.

Training camps for the new 2025–26 NBA season begin in September, with the 76ers scheduled to play two preseason games against the New York Knicks in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on October 2 and October 4.
