Off the bench and into the spotlight — Jasmine Nabor leads Chery Tiggo to their first PVL Finals in four years

The Chery Tiggo Crossovers staged a remarkable comeback over the Cignal HD Spikers in the semifinals of the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) On Tour, registering a 25-17, 16-25, 25-21, 25-23 victory in front of a roaring crowd at the Araneta Coliseum on Tuesday, August 12, to reach the finals for the first time in four years.

Ara Galang and Cess Robles led from the front with 15 points each, while Imee Hernandez contributed 12. However, the standout performance of the night came from Jasmine Nabor, who came off the bench to deliver 21 excellent sets. She also complemented Robles on defense, with Robles adding 11 excellent digs and 11 receptions.

“It just feels so good, like we have been waiting for this moment for a long time. And we worked hard for it. We gave it our all just to get here. I was getting goosebumps. I kept thinking, ‘We can really make it to the finals this time.’ I’m thankful I was subbed in again, and things turned around for us. Same thing happened in other games—we thought we were done, but we fought until the end,” Nabor said in the post-match press conference.

Notably, Nabor is the only active player remaining from the Chery Tiggo team that won the PVL title in 2021, as Mylene Paat and Shaya Adorador are currently sidelined due to injuries. Back then, she had help from the likes of Jaja Santiago and Dindin Santiago-Manabat, but the 27-year-old believes this current team has the perfect mix of rookies and veterans united by a shared goal.

“I can really say our team is super genuine. You can feel that we are all united. Everyone is equal. Like Coach Norman Miguel says, ‘There are no superstars here.’ Whether you’re a rookie or a senior, anyone can speak up, and we’re all open to it. Even when we’re tired from training, we still try to bond and build our connection. That’s something we really focus on,” she added.

Chery Tiggo is now eyeing its second PVL crown, having won its maiden league title over the PVL powerhouse Creamline Cool Smashers in a stunning five-set victory. They will face the PLDT High Speed Hitters in the finals of the PVL On Tour preseason tournament, in what promises to be an exciting encounter on Sunday, August 17, at the Mall of Asia Arena.
