Nxled signs Spain’s Paola Martinez Vela as import for PVL Reinforced Conference

In a bold move to reassert themselves as serious contenders in the upcoming 2025-26 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference, the Nxled Chameleons have made a major splash in the international market by signing Spanish national team standout Paola Martinez Vela.

The club officially announced the acquisition via its social media channels on Monday, welcoming the 27-year-old veteran to the fold. “Welcome to the Nxled Chameleons, Paola Martinez Vela!” the post read. “A member of the Spain National Team and a standout opposite hitter. She has played for top clubs across Spain, Romania, Poland, Belgium, Italy, and Cyprus. Now, she is bringing her international firepower to shine with the Chameleons.”

Standing at 6 feet tall, Vela brings a wealth of international experience and pedigree to an Nxled squad eager to climb the ranks after a lackluster performance last season. Known for her versatility and heavy hitting from both the front and back rows, the Spanish opposite hitter is expected to become an integral part of the Chameleons’ offensive and defensive schemes.

Vela’s résumé includes stints with some of the top professional volleyball clubs in Europe. She made her mark in the Spanish league before making stops in Romania with powerhouse Dinamo Bucuresti, and later in Poland with KS Pałac Bydgoszcz. She has also seen action in competitive leagues in Belgium, Italy, and Cyprus, further cementing her status as a seasoned international competitor.

With her arrival, Vela will join forces with promising rookie Lyann De Guzman and rising star EJ Laure to form a formidable trio of wing spikers. Under the guidance of Italian head coach Ettore Guidetti, known for his tactical acumen and emphasis on disciplined, high-intensity play, the Chameleons are banking on Vela’s international experience and leadership to elevate the team’s overall level of play.

The signing comes at a crucial juncture for Nxled, who are looking to bounce back after a disappointing 10th-place finish in the 2024 PVL Reinforced Conference. That campaign was marred by instability in the import slot, particularly the off-court issues surrounding Chinese spiker Jiang Xuanyao, which forced the team to bring in American reinforcement Meegan Hart midway through the season. While Hart provided stability, it was too little, too late to salvage the Chameleons’ campaign.

However, signs of a turnaround began to emerge earlier this year during the PVL On Tour preseason tournament. Under Coach Guidetti’s revamped system, the Chameleons impressed with a 4-1 win-loss record in Pool A, showing improved chemistry, sharper execution, and renewed competitive spirit. Their run ultimately ended in the quarterfinals, but it was a clear indication that the team is trending in the right direction.

With Vela now in the mix, Nxled is expected to present a more balanced and potent offensive threat. Her presence not only adds scoring firepower but also provides the team with a steadying veteran presence in high-pressure situations — something the Chameleons sorely lacked in previous seasons.

As the 2025-26 PVL Reinforced Conference approaches, all eyes will be on how this new-look Nxled squad performs under the bright lights. For now, though, the addition of Paola Martinez Vela sends a strong message to the rest of the league: the Chameleons are no longer just building — they’re ready to contend.
