Filipino boxing icon Nonito Donaire Jr. fell short of the World Boxing Association (WBA) Bantamweight world title after a split-decision loss to Japan’s Seiya Tsutsumi on Wednesday, Dec. 17, in Tokyo.
After a strong start, Donaire eventually succumbed to Tsutsumi’s speed in the later rounds, leading to the loss.
Two judges scored it 117-111 and 115-113 for Tsutsumi, while another gave the nod to Donaire, 116-112.
After three rounds of scoping each other out, Donaire exacted a blasting right hook in the fourth round that rocked Tsutsumi before being saved by the bell.
The Japanese eventually regained composure to take control of the pace and outpoint Donaire in the later rounds en route to the victory.

Donaire dropped to a 43-9 win-loss record, while Tsutsumi remained unbeaten with 13 wins and three draws.
Despite the loss, Donaire looked as strong as he was in his fights against Japanese boxer Naoya Inoue years ago.
Although no decision on his future has been announced as of yet, Donaire has previously expressed interest in capturing another world title before he retires – similar to what fellow Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao aims to do.
