Fresh off his election as president of the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF), Tony Boy Liao has thrown his full support behind the national volleyball program, expressing confidence that Alas Pilipinas can deliver medals at the 33rd Southeast Asian  (SEA) Games in Thailand this December.

Liao said that both the men’s and women’s indoor volleyball squads, as well as beach volleyball contingents, enter the SEA Games with momentum and ambition.

He believes that the men’s team, fresh from a competitive stint in the FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship, is “more prepared than ever,” even as they face powerhouses like Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand.

“Tingin ko, mas prepared ‘yung mga lalake. Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, malalakas ‘yan eh. We are preparing for them,” Liao said.

On the women’s side, Liao noted their growing cohesion and recent success under the Alas Pilipinas banner. The program’s recent transformation from a rebranded squad to a contender on the regional stage gives him reason to believe they could finally end a nearly 20-year SEA Games medal drought.

Beach volleyball, meanwhile, appears to be the area where Liao is most confident in, with the return of the proven duo Sisi Rondina and Bernadeth Pons, both former SEA Games medalists.

“I’m very confident we’re gonna have a medal,” he said. “I think as a team, we have a good chance. I can say, maybe medalya ‘yan, ‘di lang alam kung anong kulay.”

Even as he acknowledged the stiff competition and tough road ahead, Liao stressed that the combination of experience, recent international exposure, and renewed commitment gives Alas Pilipinas a real shot at the podium across multiple events.

As the country rallies behind the national squads, all eyes now turn to whether Alas Pilipinas can turn Liao’s optimism into medals in Bangkok this December.
