After the mastermind behind the Luka Doncic-to-the-Lakers trade, Nico Harrison, was fired on Wednesday by the Dallas Mavericks, many people in the NBA believe that Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving are also nearing the end of their time in Texas.
According to NBA reporter Joe Vardon, there is speculation around the league that Davis and Irving are both available in the trade market.
“The 32-year-old Davis now finds himself at the center of league-wide speculation that he might be the next to go. He has two seasons left on his current contract, with a player option for the 2027-28 season worth $62.8 million, but is eligible for a three-year extension worth approximately $218.5 million this summer. Irving, whose contract runs concurrent with Davis’ (including a player option for $42.4 million in 2027-28), finds himself in a similar situation,” Vardon wrote.
Harrison’s firing marks a tonal shift in Dallas, especially for team governor Patrick Dumont, who will certainly look to undo the moves that his former general manager made.

Irving tore his ACL last March and has not yet had a true schedule for return, while Davis, who was brought in for Harrison for his defense, has missed the team’s last six games due to a calf strain.
Since being dealt to the Mavericks alongside Max Christie for Doncic in one of the most shocking trades in sports history, Davis has largely stepped up to the plate after averaging 20.8 points and 10.8 rebounds so far, with his health being one of the main concerns.
No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg is having a good rookie season so far with 15 points and 6.8 boards per game, signalling that Dumont will want to go full-force in rebuilding the team around the former Duke University star.
The trade rumors also indicate that Dallas would be willing to bottom out this season in hopes of getting another miracle in the draft lottery, as they still have a sliver of draft capital with their first-round pick this year after Harrison traded away most of it.
Whatever happens, Harrison’s firing and the availability of both Davis and Irving are signs that the Mavericks are looking ahead with the Doncic trade in the rearview mirror and Flagg in the passenger seat.
