The Oklahoma City Thunder has ensured that they are holding on to the jewel of their crown and reigning National Basketball Association (NBA) Most Valuable Player (MVP) Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for the foreseeable future.
NBA insider and ESPN’s Shams Charania took to social networking platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to report that Gilgeous-Alexander has signed a four-year, $285 million supermax extension with the franchise—marking the richest annual salary in league history.
“NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has agreed to a four-year, $285 million super maximum contract extension with the championship team Oklahoma City Thunder through 2030-31. This is now the richest annual salary for a player in league history,” Charania posted.
The contract extension will begin in the 2027-28 season, following the conclusion of Gilgeous-Alexander’s current deal. The 26-year-old is set to earn $38 million next season and $40 million in 2026-27. Once the extension kicks in, his annual salary will jump to a staggering $63 million, reaching nearly $79 million by the 2030-31 season. This will make Gilgeous-Alexander the first player in NBA history to earn approximately $1 million per regular-season game, setting the record for the highest single-season salary ever.
The superstar guard was the driving force behind the Thunder’s maiden NBA title, leading the team past the Indiana Pacers in the Finals. He averaged 30.7 points per game during the series, earning him the Finals MVP award. With this performance, Gilgeous-Alexander joined an elite group of players who have won both the regular-season MVP and Finals MVP in the same season.
He also became the first player since Shaquille O’Neal in 2000 to win the NBA scoring title and the championship in the same year. Moreover, he became just the fourth player in league history to win all three honors—scoring champion, MVP, and NBA champion—in a single season.
By signing this supermax extension, Gilgeous-Alexander becomes only the 15th player in NBA history to do so—a fitting recognition for a player who has proven to be the cornerstone of the Thunder’s success.
