The Houston Rockets have pulled off a major coup by securing star forward Kevin Durant to a two-year, $90 million contract extension, including a player option for the 2027–28 season.

The news was first reported by NBA insider Shams Charania of The Athletic and ESPN, who shared on X (formerly Twitter):

“Houston Rockets star Kevin Durant has agreed to a two-year, $90 million contract extension with the franchise, his business partner and Boardroom CEO Rich Kleiman tells ESPN. The new deal includes a player option in 2027-28.”

Durant, 37, was eligible for a maximum extension worth $120 million over two years but reportedly chose to take $30 million less to provide the Rockets with greater financial flexibility and commit long-term to the organization.

With this new deal, Durant becomes the highest-paid player in NBA history by career earnings, now totaling $598.2 million, surpassing LeBron James’ $583.9 million. Durant is set to earn $54.7 million this season, bringing his total commitment with Houston to three years and $144.7 million.

The veteran forward joined the Rockets in early July via a blockbuster, record-setting seven-team trade, which broke the previous record for the largest multi-team deal in league history — a six-team trade in 2024 that sent Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks.

Despite his age, Durant remains one of the league’s elite players. Last season with the Phoenix Suns, he averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists across 62 games. Remarkably, he has posted at least 25 points per game, with 50% shooting from the field and 40% from three in each of the last three seasons — the longest such streak in NBA history.

Currently ranked eighth on the NBA’s all-time scoring list with 30,571 points, Durant has a strong chance to move into the top five by the end of the 2025–26 season. If he maintains his current scoring pace, he could pass Wilt Chamberlain, Dirk Nowitzki, and Michael Jordan.

Houston’s front office has been active this offseason, locking in core talent and bolstering the roster. Along with Durant’s extension, the Rockets re-signed head coach Ime Udoka, as well as Fred VanVleet, Steven Adams, and Jabari Smith Jr.. The team also added Dorian Finney-Smith, Clint Capela, and Josh Okogie in free agency, while re-signing Jae’Sean Tate, Aaron Holiday, and Jeff Green.

With Durant on board and a revamped supporting cast, the Rockets are positioning themselves as serious contenders in the Western Conference for the seasons ahead.
