The Chicago Bulls have managed to hold on to an important player for the foreseeable future after restricted free agent Josh Giddey committed his future to the franchise just a year after being acquired from the Oklahoma City Thunder.

NBA insider and ESPN’s Shams Charania confirmed the development on social platform X (formerly Twitter) in the early hours of Wednesday, September 10 (Philippine Standard Time).

“Restricted free agent Josh Giddey has reached an agreement on a four-year, $100 million deal to re-sign with the Chicago Bulls, agent Daniel Moldovan of Lighthouse Sports Management tells ESPN,” Charania posted.

It is understood that the figure is lower than what Giddey had initially sought before free agency, with HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto recently reporting that the guard wanted around $150 million over five years.

The 22-year-old enjoyed an impressive debut season with Chicago, averaging 14.6 points while posting career highs in rebounds (8.1), assists (7.2), steals (1.2), and three-point shooting (37.8%). He also recorded seven triple-doubles — the most by a Bull in a single season, trailing only Michael Jordan’s 15 in 1988–89.

Notably, the Australian became the first player to post at least 15 points, 15 assists, 10 rebounds, and 8 steals in a single game since steals became an official stat in 1973–74, accomplishing the feat against the Los Angeles Lakers on March 22.

Selected sixth overall by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2021 NBA Draft, Giddey spent three seasons in OKC, flashing potential but struggling with consistency. He still holds the record as the youngest player in NBA history to record a triple-double, doing so at just 19 years and 84 days old with 17 points, 14 assists, and 13 rebounds.

Giddey’s new contract also makes him Australia’s highest-paid athlete. His salary will range from $22.3 to $27.6 million per season through 2029, when he will become an unrestricted free agent. His career earnings currently stand at $27.2 million and will grow to $127.2 million by the end of his new deal.
