NBA Trade Report: Grizzlies send Desmond Bane to Orlando in exchange for Caldwell-Pope and Cole Anthony

In the first major trade deal of the NBA summer, the Orlando Magic have acquired guard Desmond Bane from the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for guard Cole Anthony, guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, four unprotected first-round picks, and one first-round pick swap.

Orlando’s management confirmed the trade on social media in the early hours of Monday, June 16 (Philippine Standard Time), with Magic president Jeff Weltman officially welcoming Bane.

“We are thrilled to welcome Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic family. Over his five years in the NBA, Desmond has distinguished himself as one of the elite guards in our league, and we look forward to his shooting, IQ, and wide-ranging skill set helping our team take a step forward. Desmond’s character is held in high regard across the league, and we believe he will fit seamlessly with our existing players both on and off the court,” Weltman said.

Bane is widely considered one of the top guards in the league and is one of only three NBA players with 800 made three-pointers and a 40 percent three-point shooting rate since joining the league in 2020. According to ESPN, this is the third-best rate among players with at least 1,000 attempts.

The 26-year-old averaged 19.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 5.3 assists across 69 games this past season for the Grizzlies. In his five seasons with Memphis, he holds career averages of 17.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 3.8 assists, while shooting 41 percent from three. Bane gives the Magic a much-needed boost in outside shooting—Orlando ranked last in three-point field goal percentage (31.8%) this season, the lowest for any NBA team since the 2015–16 Los Angeles Lakers.

He also provides the Magic with a reliable scoring option behind Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner, both of whom missed significant time due to oblique injuries. Notably, Bane signed a five-year, $207 million contract extension with the Grizzlies before the 2023–24 season and is now locked in with the Magic through the 2028–29 season.

Meanwhile, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope joins the Grizzlies after averaging 8.7 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.8 assists across 77 games for the Magic. This marks the sixth team of his NBA career. He has previously won NBA titles with the Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets, and he is under contract through the 2026–27 season.

Cole Anthony, who has spent his entire career with Orlando, averaged 9.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.9 assists in 67 games this season. His career averages stand at 12.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game. He is also under contract through the 2026–27 season.
