The San Antonio Spurs have managed to hold on to one of their most important players, as it has emerged that guard De’Aaron Fox has agreed to a four-year, $229 million maximum contract extension with the franchise.

NBA insider and ESPN reporter Shams Charania announced the news on X (formerly Twitter) in the early hours of Tuesday, August 5 (Philippine Standard Time).

“San Antonio Spurs star De’Aaron Fox has agreed to a four-year, $229 million maximum contract extension with the franchise, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul told ESPN. The max deal secures Fox’s future in San Antonio through the 2029–30 season,” Charania posted.

Fox’s extension ensures that he cements his place alongside Victor Wembanyama as one of the faces of the San Antonio franchise through the 2029–30 NBA season. The deal does not include a player option in the final year. Overall, the 27-year-old is projected to earn approximately $265.6 million over the next five seasons.

Fox only arrived in San Antonio from the Sacramento Kings on February 3, 2025, after being involved in a three-team trade that also included the Chicago Bulls. The guard averaged 19.7 points, 6.8 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game in 17 appearances for his new team before undergoing season-ending surgery on a torn tendon in his left pinkie. He notably played through the pain for much of the season, having suffered the injury during training camp in October.

In total, Fox played 62 games last season across the Kings and Spurs, averaging 23.5 points, 6.3 assists, and 4.8 rebounds per game. His season highlight came on November 15 against the Minnesota Timberwolves, when he dropped 60 points, setting a Kings franchise record. Only Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic matched that feat last season with another 60-point game.

Selected fifth overall in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Kings, Fox is one of only two players — alongside Luka Dončić — to average 20+ points, 5+ assists, and 1+ steal in each of the last six NBA seasons. He also joins James Harden, Russell Westbrook, and Jokic as the only players to record 10,000 points, 3,000 assists, and 700 steals since entering the league in 2017–18.

With Fox’s future now secure in San Antonio, the Spurs boast one of the most exciting young rosters in the NBA, including Victor Wembanyama, NBA Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle, and No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper.
