Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Dončić continues to prove why he is regarded as one of the greatest European players of all time — and a future Hall of Famer. The Slovenian guard once again showcased his brilliance at the 2025 EuroBasket, delivering a historic triple-double to lead Slovenia past Belgium, 86-69, on Sunday, August 31 (Philippine Standard Time).
The 26-year-old finished with 26 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists while shooting 9-of-23 from the field and 2-of-11 from deep. In doing so, Dončić became only the fourth player ever to record a triple-double in FIBA EuroBasket history.
His milestone performance gave Slovenia its first win of the tournament after a disappointing start in the group stage. Despite Dončić’s heroics, the team had gone winless in their opening games, struggling to find support around their NBA star.
Dončić’s historic night came just a day after he erupted for 39 points against France on Saturday, adding eight rebounds and nine assists while shooting 40 percent from the field and beyond the arc. In Slovenia’s opening game against Poland, he shot 50 percent, tallying four rebounds and nine assists. Through three games, Dončić is averaging an astounding 33.0 points, 7.3 rebounds, 9.7 assists, and 3.3 steals.
Such dominance has not gone unnoticed in Los Angeles. Lakers governor Jeanie Buss and president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka traveled to Poland to watch their franchise cornerstone compete on the international stage.
“Zero problems. It’s just something we believe in as an organization,” Pelinka said. “It’s great to see him with his teammates, interacting, having fun. He is in great shape, really committed to working hard this summer, and being able to watch that in person was worth flying across the ocean.”
The Lakers are in the process of building around Dončić, who signed a three-year, $165 million contract extension earlier this summer. The deal will pay him just under $50 million in 2026–27, before his salary crosses the $50 million threshold through 2029.
Last season, Dončić averaged 28.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 8.0 assists per game while shooting 44 percent from the field and 38 percent from three in 28 appearances for the Lakers. He is expected to shoulder an even greater load as the franchise chases its first NBA championship since 2020.
