In a move that adds both veteran leadership and depth to the backcourt, the Sacramento Kings are set to sign former MVP Russell Westbrook, one of the most accomplished players in NBA history.

NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN confirmed the news via social media platform X (formerly Twitter), reporting that the nine-time All-Star has agreed to terms with Sacramento. The 36-year-old will sign a one-year, $3.6 million veteran’s minimum contract, entering his 18th NBA season.

“Nine-time NBA All-Star Russell Westbrook has agreed on a deal to sign with the Sacramento Kings,” Charania reported. “Jeff Schwartz of Excel Sports Management tells ESPN. The 2017 league MVP enters his 18th NBA season.”

Westbrook had been in communication with Kings management throughout the offseason and is said to be excited about the opportunity. He reportedly maintains strong relationships with several Sacramento players, including Domantas Sabonis, DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine, and Dennis Schroder, as well as key figures within the organization such as assistant GM BJ Armstrong, GM Scott Perry, and head coach Doug Christie.

Westbrook joins Sacramento after a solid season with the Denver Nuggets, where he appeared in 75 games (36 starts), averaging 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 44.9% from the field. His 52% shooting on two-point attempts marked a career-best.

Over the last three seasons, Westbrook has embraced a bench role in many situations, coming off the bench in 145 of his last 216 games and finishing in the top 10 of Sixth Man of the Year voting each season.

Originally drafted fourth overall in the 2008 NBA Draft by the Seattle SuperSonics (now the Oklahoma City Thunder), Westbrook has built a résumé that places him among the NBA’s all-time greats. He is the league’s all-time leader in triple-doubles with 203, and one of only two players—along with LeBron James—to record 25,000 points, 8,000 rebounds, and 8,000 assists in a career.

Currently sitting at 26,205 career points, Westbrook needs just 506 more to surpass Oscar Robertson as the highest-scoring point guard in NBA history. He also stands 75 assists shy of becoming the eighth player in NBA history to record 10,000 career assists.

Sacramento will be the seventh team of Westbrook’s illustrious career, which includes stints with the Thunder, Rockets, Wizards, Lakers, Clippers, and most recently, the Nuggets. His accolades include:

  • 2017 NBA MVP
  • Two-time NBA scoring champion
  • Three-time NBA assists leader
  • Nine-time NBA All-Star

As the Kings look to build on recent success, Westbrook brings leadership, playoff experience, and a relentless motor to a team with postseason aspirations. His signing marks another significant step in Sacramento’s effort to solidify itself as a Western Conference contender.
