NBA Cup Final predictions: It’s Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs’ time to shine

Not a lot of people expected the San Antonio Spurs to end the Oklahoma City Thunder’s 16-game win streak and hand them their second loss this season – especially considering Victor Wembanyama was coming off a calf injury. Yet when the final buzzer sounded, the Spurs looked like the worldbeaters, and the Thunder finally looked normal.

On the other side, the New York Knicks looked like their old selves but were more aggressive and hungrier for the team’s core’s first trophy together. Make no mistake, the Magic were no slouches, yet the Knicks’ organic ballhandling and tight defense made them look like the dwellar-celling Magic of old.

And now here we are, the NBA Cup final that features two old giants looking to reclaim new glory against one another. One team features a demigod raring for immediate success, surrounded by quick guards that have shown beautiful harmony this season. The other, a team that has long been prophesied by the East as one of its strongest contenders, courtesy of a core that has played with one another since college alongside a true modern stretch five that can shape the tide of games on his own.

Why?

Wemby. That’s why. If beating the Thunder wasn’t good enough for you, then an NBA Cup final win over the Knicks would surely be enough. A win not only grants them a trophy but also certifies the threat that a Wembanyama-led Spurs team possesses. 

Even without Wemby, San Antonio recorded a 9-3 record this season, alleviating any doubts that surrounded De’Aaron Fox’s place in the Spurs team. Other young guards in Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle have fully assumed the roles of two-way guards that can help the team in so many ways, alongside one of the best offseason signings so far in Luke Kornet.

With all that being said, however, the Knicks also have the tools that can hamper Wemby’s abilities by double-teaming him with viable defenders in OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges, and Josh Hart. It will eventually boil down to how New York can prevent Wemby from becoming comfortable down the stretch, and how they deal with Fox, Castle, and Harper’s facilitating and shotmaking afterwards.
