Mikey Williams unlikely to return for PBA’s 50th season after Converge talks collapse

Two-time PBA Finals MVP Mikey Williams will miss the league’s historic 50th season after contract discussions with the Converge FiberXers have yet to be finalized.

The former All-Star declined Converge’s reportedly generous one-year contract offer because it was still short of his asking price of $26,000 (P1,515,4100) a month, according to SPIN.ph.

The 34-year-old recently played in the PBA for the TNT Tropang 5G in the 2023 season, averaging 18.4 points, 4.1 assists, and 3.9 rebounds. Controversy surrounded Williams when he refused to play and show up for TNT in the Governor’s Cup before having his contract terminated.

Regardless of the outcome of the Mikey Williams situation, Converge has to explain to its fans why it traded Jordan Heading without an assurance that the 2-time Finals MVP would sign with them especially since Mikey is apparently standing firm with his steep salary demands.

Last June, TNT dealt Williams’ rights to Converge in exchange for Jordan Heading, and since then, the FiberXers’ team consultant and Strong Group Athletics owner Frank Lao has tried to persuade Williams to suit up for the team.

Converge boasts a roster led by Schonny Winston and Justine Baltazar, alongside a core of Alec Stockton, Paolo Javillonar, and newly drafted Juan Gomez de Liano.

Dennis Pineda, who steered the Pampanga Giant Lanterns to two consecutive titles in the MPBL, will try to develop the young team into a contender alongside assistant coaches Willie Miller, Danny Ildefonso, Karl Santos, and Francis Atienza.
