Mika Reyes shines as PVL on Tour Finals MVP

Mika Reyes made her mark in a historic way, powering the PLDT High Speed Hitters to their first-ever Premier Volleyball League (PVL) crown and claiming her own career milestone along the way.

The 31-year-old middle blocker delivered a stellar performance in the Finals on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay, dropping 20 points, including a game-high seven blocks, to earn the Finals MVP honors of the preseason tournament.

The championship showdown was no easy feat. After jumping out to a commanding two-set lead, PLDT nearly saw the victory slip away as Chery Tiggo roared back to take the next two frames, forcing a deciding fifth set. But Reyes and company refused to break, steadying themselves in the clutch to close out the match, 25-17, 25-17, 19-25, 24-26, 15-8, and finally lift the long-awaited trophy.

Reyes, who once starred for De La Salle University during her collegiate days, admitted during the post-game press conference that she didn’t see the individual recognition coming.
“‘Di ko rin talaga in-expect. ‘Di ko rin narinig actually, pero hindi ko rin talaga in-expect,” she said with a laugh, clearly still taking in the moment.

Despite her dominant showing, Reyes was quick to emphasize that she valued the collective triumph far more than personal accolades. For her, the championship itself was the true prize.
“I think mas importante talaga sa’kin ‘yung para sa team. Mas gusto kong makuha ‘yung championship than any other individual award,” she explained, highlighting how the team’s perseverance mattered most.

Indeed, the title was a culmination of years of near misses and heartbreaks for PLDT, which made the victory all the sweeter.

The High Speed Hitters endured struggles and disappointments in past conferences, but Reyes shared that those setbacks became the very fuel that pushed them toward success.

“Sobrang frustrating talaga siya at the same time, ‘yung sinabi rin ni coach [Rald Ricafort] kanina na sa lahat ng mga heartbreaks na na-experience namin, hindi pa rin kami tumigil. I think ‘yun ‘yung nagpapasarap talaga sa championship na ‘to,” she said.

“Kasi kahit anong mangyari the past few years, mas naging motivation pa sa amin ‘yun.”

For Reyes, the journey was as meaningful as the destination. At 6 feet tall and with years of leadership experience, she not only anchored PLDT on the floor but also became the emotional core of a team that had been yearning for a breakthrough.

With this championship now in the books, Reyes and the High Speed Hitters are far from done. They’ll look to ride their momentum into the upcoming 2025 Invitational Conference, which kicks off on Thursday, August 21.
